I began documenting these visions in a visual dream journal, along with scenes and recurring themes from my dreams. Twenty-five years later, I began bringing those ideas to life through my Dream Series. It holds a recurring theme that carried from my teens to early twenties—detached, disconnected trees. They are missing a portion of the trunk a few feet above the ground and hang suspended in the air. A bit of moss hangs from the bottom of the visible trunk, giving the perception that they have been like this for a long time. In this particular dream, the tree was in my bedroom. My dad was knelt down inspecting the tree in quiet contemplation as I awaited his wisdom and knowledge on the matter. A bright nightlight was coming from the lower left of the room, creating a dramatic light effect. They are scowling at me, and I get the sense that I’m in trouble and being judged for something, but I don’t know what. I have painted this a couple of times over the years, and it has evolved into a grown woman—maybe because a grown woman is capable of making her own decisions to play with danger. Tornadoes have infiltrated my dreams since early childhood and still do to this day. There’s a bridge over a body of water—like the Golden Gate. The bridge suffers a catastrophic failure, and several cars fall into the water with the collapsed section. I see an aerial view of the scene, as if I’m in a helicopter. Then, it shifts to an emergency control center where people are preparing to rescue those in the water—but from below, through a portal in the wall. A rescuer reaches into the portal and grabs onto a kelp tree to pull themself up into the underwater realm. The people in the cars are temporarily okay due to trapped air.
